Spring is Sprung
So what has Spring held for the busy bees at Science City York?
My own personal work has focused on promoting the SCY Business Mentor Service. I have written press releases, edited brochures and spent a lot of hours across various social networking sites – all in the name of work, I promise!
I have made my first foray in to the world of print and fulfilment services, drafted my first direct mail letter, and attended my first SCY company picnic. This was a fabulous event where each team member signed up to bring a different snack and I was very pleasantly surprised by my colleagues’ culinary expertise – coconut macaroons and swiss onion tart were amongst the delicious homemade treats on offer. I admit that I wasn’t expecting my run of ‘firsts’ to continue well in to my fifth month here, but they have been only nice surprises and I am stupidly excited about the prospect of my first company rounders match in the Summer!
In other news, Springboard at the Ron Cooke Hub has welcomed its second round of occupants and the brand new state of the art offices and laboratories at the Food and Environment Research Agency at Sand Hutton are officially open. This was the culmination of a project utilising £3 million of the £19.7 million of European Commission funding awarded to SCY, the University of York and Fera. This new ‘Innovation Campus’ could create up to 100 new jobs as well as providing incubation space and business opportunities for SMEs. This is exactly the kind of result that the team here at SCY work so hard to achieve: growing York’s science base, creating jobs and increasing business opportunities for the local economy.
The document mentioned in my last blog post has also come to fruition as a proposal has now been submitted to the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) for York to have a dedicated local TV station. We even made a cool video to go with it.
Exciting things are afoot so watch this space.
