£1.6 Million: Centre of Excellence in Mass Spectrometry
£1.6 million was secured by SCY in 2009 to develop a new scientific Centre for Excellence at the University of York, providing major benefits for the chemical, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.
The Centre for Excellence in Mass Spectrometry houses an array of the latest technical instrumentation, helping industry scientists and researchers to overcome the most testing analytical challenges in the development of new products.
The facility places York at the forefront of this specialist field by offering the broadest range of mass spectrometers rivalling similar centres in Cambridge, Manchester and Scotland.
Companies and organisations using the resource are able to choose from a number of options, including hiring the equipment, paying on a fee-for-service analysis or entering into collaborative research.
Fay Treloar, Head of Operations at SCY who led the bid to secure the funding says: “This is a fantastic facility exploiting the academic excellence of the University. The Centre is playing a key role in both retaining existing companies and helping to attract new businesses and income to the region.”
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, Professor Brian Cantor, adds: “The Centre represents a major step forward in our ability to solve challenging analytical problems. It gives business the opportunity to harness the University’s world class research expertise and innovation for the benefit of the economy, both regionally and nationally, and the public good.”
